Alan Belcher fick se sig besegrad via tekniskt domslut (30-27, 30-27 och 29-28) i rond 3 (4:29) efter att ha fått ett finger i ögat av Michael Bisping på UFC 159: Jones vs Sonnen. På presskonferensen efter galan berättade UFC:s vd Dana White att Belcher var tvungen att åka till sjukhus men mycket mer visste han inte.
”All I know is that he (Belcher Reds anm) was transported”, sa White.
Belcher har tidigare opererat just det ögat som i natt blev skadat. Han hade varit och tränat i Brasilien när näthinnan lossnade och tvingade honom att åka tillbaka till USA för en akut ögonoperation. Operationen lyckades inte och Belcher fick ställa in sin match mot Demian Maia på UFC Fight Night 22. Ett år senare var han dock tillbaka efter ytterligare operationer. Han berättade för MMAfighting om hur allvarlig skadan var:
”Worst case is I don’t get any better than this and I’m only working with one eye and then I probably don’t want to risk fighting again with only one eye, cause if I lose that one, then I’m going to be blind. So it’s just — I’m not even really thinking about fighting right now. I’m just going to wait a couple months and see where I’m at. It’s disappointing cause I was on a roll and getting close to a title [shot].”
