På presskonferensen inför UFC on Fox 3 berättade Dana White att han försökt få till en match mellan BJ ”The Prodigy” Penn och den regerande lättviktsmästaren i Strikeforce Gilbert ”El Niño” Melendez men att Penn inte varit intresserad.
I en nyligen genomförd intervju kommenterade Penn det diskuterade mötet med Melendez och han förtydligar att det inte var motståndet det var fel på, bara platsen.
”[White] offered a fight against Gilbert Melendez in Strikeforce. We sat down and we thought about it for a little while. We talked back and forth.”, säger Penn till The MMA Hour. ”It was kind of one of those things where I guess at the end of the day we thought about it a thousand different ways and we were like, ’Is that downgrading yourself fighting in Strikeforce? If you win the Strikeforce title are people going to say you did it because you couldn’t win the UFC title?’…At the end of the day, it just didn’t make sense to us.”
White har vid flera tillfällen hävdat att Penn kommer att återvända till sporten och att det kommer bli som welterviktare. Själv gör Penn fortfarande inga sådana löften även om han medger att han förmodligen inte gjort tillräckligt i sporten ännu och att han fortfarande drömmer om att bli en mästare igen.
