Tre raka knockoutförluster har fått ”Donnybrook” att hänga upp handskarna.
Den 33-årige lätt tungviktaren Cody ”Donnybrook” Donovan (8-5) har valt att gå i pension, med ett matchfacit på 1-3 i UFC och en ”Fight of the Night”-bonus inkasserad. Amerikanen annonserade detta via sin officiella hemsida.
”After almost 12 years of fighting…pursuing and living my dream, I am officially announcing my retirement from professional MMA. After much thought and discussion with my coaches and wife, we decided it is time to close this chapter of my life. I love fighting and competing but my body is no longer allowing me to do so. Injury after injury, surgery after surgery, I try to come back better, faster, stronger but there comes a time when your body says, ’Alright, no more.’ As I’ve said in many interviews, God has a much greater plan for me than any other plan I could ever come up with for myself. I also have wisely began working on thinking and strategizing my post career planning with the support of everyone in my life. I am blessed to have embarked on this new adventure with everyone behind me.”
Cody Donovan tog sig in i UFC med tidigare segrar i bland annat Bellator i bagaget. Han färdades hela vägen till Australien för att möta kanadensaren Nick Penner i sin UFC-debut på UFC on FX 6. Donovan vann matchen via knockout i den första ronden, bägge herrarna tilldelades dock ”Fight of the Night”-bonusen. Därefter förlorade han två raka matcher via knockout, mot Strikeforce-importerna Ovince St. Preux och Gian Villante. I sitt senaste framträdande ställdes han mot ukrainaren Nikita Krylov på UFC Fight Night 46 i Dublin, Irland, och förlorade åter igen på knockout.
