I förrgår dök det upp information om att Jon Jones och Chael Sonnen kommer att agera coacher i den kommande The Ultimate Fighter 17 som har premiär i januari. Sedan kommer de två mötas i en titelmatch den 27 april nästa år. Många fans har svarat väldigt negativt till att det var just Sonnen som fick titelchansen när det nu finns mängder med legitima utmanare på titeln, och att Sonnen inte ens gått en match i lätt tungvikt på åtta år. Jones höll med fansen en del på detta påstående.
”Does it de-legitimize the belt? I’m going to have to say (it does) in some ways,” säger Jones på presskonferensen inför TUF 17. ”But in some ways it doesn’t because this has nothing to do with the belt for me. This is more about putting him into irrelevance.”
För närvarande kommer Sonnen dessutom från en förlust, vilket egentligen borde sätta honom ännu längre ifrån en titelchans. Men UFCs VD Dana White ser det på ett annat sätt.
”Every one of these guys that are bitching about the title shot right now were offered the fight and turned it down,” säger White. ”They refused to fight Jon Jones. Now, they’re bummed out because Chael stepped up on eight days’ notice and he’s going to coach ’The Ultimate Fighter’ and going to fight him. It’s pretty simple.”
