På lördag möter Luke Rockhold (10-1) Vitor Belfort (22-10) i huvudmatchen på UFC on FX 8, som hålls i Jaragua do Sul, Brasilien. Förutom att vara en betydelsefull match i mellanviktsdivisionen, är det en fight som eldats på av Belforts kontroversiella bruk av testosteronterapi (TRT). Rockhold har varit öppet misstänksam och kritisk i frågan. I en intervju för MMAjunkie sa den amerikanske mellanviktaren:
”It bothers me to take that route (TRT) when you have a history of steroids and you’ve been caught in the past. Obviously you’re looking for a way to supplement again and get on it. I’m a fan of a clean sport, and I’m here to clean up the sport.”
Rockhold syftade på Belforts positiva test för otillåtna preparat 2006, som ledde till nio månaders avstängning.
På presskonferensen igår inför lördagens match fick mellanviktarna för första gången chansen att ställa upp sig mot varandra för fotografering. Belfort sträckte ut en näve som nästan nuddade motståndarens haka, i en provokativ gest. Konfrontationen väckte känslor hos Rockhold:
”Him squaring up, you want to put your hand on my chin? Alright. Let’s go. Just squaring off with him and seeing eye to eye, it just really fires me up, I’m not going to lie. Standing there and squaring off with Vitor, he just lit a fire under my ass. I’m seeing red right now, and I’m in kill mode. I’m just ready to get in there and fight. That’s all I’m thinking about right now. I’ve lost my respect for Vitor and what he’s done, and I’m just focused on fighting.”
