I veckans upplaga av sportprogrammet UFC Tonight så gav vd Dana White sina åsikter om welterviktsmästaren Georges St-Pierres påstådda planer att gå i pension. Han uppgav bland annat att det inte är ett alternativ för St-Pierre att ta paus från sporten samtidigt som han behåller bältet, samt att en rematch med Johny Hendricks kommer att hända.
Dana White backar inte angående sin kritik mot Georges St- Pierres (25-2) uttalanda efter UFC 167. St- Pierre uppgav direkt efter det framgångsrika titelförsvaret att han behövde en paus från sporten, på grund av personliga problem. UFC:s vd var väldigt kritiskt till detta redan på presskonferensen efter galan, där han bland annat sa att St- Pierre var ”skyldig” UFC, utmanaren Johny Hendricks (15-2) och fansen en rematch. White fick från olika håll kritik för uttalandet, då vissa menade på att St-Pierre, bokstavligen, är den som har lagt ner mest tid i buren i organisationens historia. White stod dock fast vid att om St-Pierre vill pensionera sig från sporten så är han fri att göra detta, men att låta mästaren ta en paus och samtidigt behålla bältet är inget som vd:n är redo att tillåta. Under måndagens upplaga av UFC Tonight så utvecklade White sina åsikter i frågan.
”First of all I’m the guy who talks about GSP all the time,” sa White. ”Talks what an amazing champion he’s been, how he represents the sport, the title, the brand his country, his list goes on and on. But, he made a big mistake, when he said what he said,” fortsatte vd:n. ”Shouldn’t have said it, didn’t make sense, and it left everyone wondering what was going on, including me.”
White håller dock fast vid åsikten om att St-Pierre är skyldig att försvara sin titel så fort som möjligt.
”When we talk about ‘GSP doesn’t owe you anything,’ You’re wrong,” sa White. ”Here’s the reality: GSP took almost a year and a half off. And he’s had two (tre, reds. anm.) fights since then, since he tore his ACL out. When you fight in this sport, there’s a small opportunity for people, and there’s a lineup of people who want a shot at the UFC 170-pound title. You can’t just say I’m going to put this on hold because you have personal problems. You can’t do that. No, you cannot. You can’t do that.”
White verkade även väldigt säker på att mästaren inte är klar inom sporten, och att pratet om pension inte stämmer.
”There will be a rematch,” sa White. ”GSP did not retire on Saturday night.”
