När Mark Munoz skadade sig fick hans planerade motståndare Michael Bisping snabbt möjligheten att bli ersättare i matchen mot Chael Sonnen på UFC on FOX 2 den 28 januari.
Rockaden lämnade Demian Maia utan motståndare på galan och fans höjde sina röster för att Rousimar Palhares skulle sättas in mot Maia. Många menade att det skulle vara möjligt eftersom han besegrat Mike Massenzio efter lite över en minut under UFC 142 förra helgen. Men det var inte en match som Maia var intresserad av.
”It was rumored (a fight with Palhares), but I thought there would not be any possibilities (of it happening), because he just fought, it doesn’t make sense for him to throw himself into another fight right now. ”Toquinho” trained a few months for this fight. Just because it was fast doesn’t mean there were no wear and tears. But I don’t even think about that. To be honest, the Brazilian fans should be more worried about seeing us fighting foreigners. There are (only) a few Brazilian fighters in the division and I think that, aside of the title, since it’s Anderson who is the champion, the Brazilians should not face each other.”, säger Demian Maia via SporTV.
Palhares ska ha blivit erbjuden matchen men enligt Dana White så valde ”Toquinho” att avstå från möjligheten. Chansen gick istället till Chris Weidman som enbart behövde 30 minuters betänketid för att ta matchen med tio dagars varsel.
