Matchen mellan Diego Sanchez och Jake Ellenberger på UFC on Fuel TV 1: Sanchez vs Ellenberger slutade i ett domslut. Alla tre domarna tilldelade de två första ronderna till Ellenberger, medan Sanchez tog hem den sista ronden. I slutändan så innebar det att Ellenberger vann matchen via ett enhälligt domslut med siffrorna 29-28 från alla tre domarna.
Men i en intervju med Fuel TV direkt efter matchen avslöjade Sanchez att han inte kom in i matchen 100% hel, utan att han stukade sin vrist för tre veckor sedan.
”It was a great challenge, and a great effort. I had a lot of obstacles to overcome coming in to this fight,” säger Sanchez till Fuel TV. ”I really severely sprained my ankle three weeks before the fight. You know, I had to pulled out of the Matt Hughes fight for of my broken hand. I have a family to take care of. I refused to… I wasn’t pulling out of the fight. You know what I mean? I just did what I could do. I iced it, I elevated it, I taped it and I trained as much as I could. I came to the fight and I went to battle. You know, I wish the fight would have been 5 rounds, I think i had some momentum if it would have gone into a fourth. But you know what, it is what it is. I went for the stoppage, I should have gone for the choke.”
Men Sanchez hade inga större problem med sin vrist när det väl var dags för matchen, problemet var att han inte hade kunnat förbereda sig ordentligt inför själva matchögonblicket.
”You know what, it wasn’t that it bothered me, you know. It was okay, I had a ankle bracelet on it and a little tape. But you know, i didn’t have the proper training that I could have had if I would have been at a 100%,” fortsätter Sanchez. ”I didn’t get to run, i didn’t get to sprint, I couldn’t even jump rope. I had to just basically work around the injury, do what i could to do and prepare. I came in with the best possible Sanchez I could be. I gave it my all and I came close to get it there in the end.”
Det är inte en direkt ovanligt att skador avslöjas efter en match är avklarad, då det är strategiskt väldigt dumt att berätta om den innan matchen är igång. Men Sanchez avslutar själv med att han ändå var den bästa möjliga Sanchez han kunde vara efter matchen var över.
