I helgen går Michelle ”The Karate Hottie” Waterson (14-6) sin femte match i UFC mot Cortney Casey (7-5) på huvudkortet under UFC on FOX 29: Poirier vs. Gaethje. Innan matchen tog MMAnytts Damon Martin ett snack med Waterson där hon uttryckte sin önskan om att se UFC adoptera en atomvikts-division.
Waterson var mästarinna i atomvikt i Invicta FC – när hon gick över till UFC var hon dock tvungen att gå upp till den övre viktklassen stråvikt, där hon fortfarande är rankad i topp 10.
“Of course. There’s so many women that compete in MMA that train just as hard as the guys do and they need a home,” sade Waterson till MMAnytt. “They need a place to showcase their skills.
“Absolutely I think they should add the weight class. It would expand the UFC roster and there are a lot of entertaining 105’ers that are heavy hitters, they’re fast, they’re good submission artists. So yeah, I think they should definitely add it.”
Vidare sade Waterson att atomviktklassen för damer är full med talanger – betydligt fler talanger än i damernas fjädervikt, som trots detta har ett hem i UFC. Waterson tror dock att det bara är en tidsfråga innan UFC anammar den nya viktklassen.
“I think there are more atomweight fighters than there are fighters in [Cris] Cyborg’s weight class. They have a weight class for her,” sade Waterson.
“100-percent. It should happen and it eventually will.”
