Fabricio Werdum (19-5-1-0) ska möta Cain Velasquez (13-1) på UFC 188 för att höra upp om tungviktstiteln och Werdum tror att han kommer kunna vinna matchen med hjälp av sin jiu-jitsu.
En resa till Mexico City kostade nästan Werdum hans liv, då han blev koldioxidförgiftad och med en andra resa inplanerad till samma stad så skulle man tro att Werdum skulle vara lite tveksam över att åka tillbaka, men så är inte fallet alls.
“If I have to spend two, three months there and (almost) die again, I’ll do it,” he said. “I’m bringing this belt home, one more time, with much pride. I always say that I represent Brazil and I’m very proud to be gaucho.”
Trots att det är Velasquez som kommer ha mest stöd då han slåss på hemmaplan så känner Werdum att fansen i Mexico känner honom bra och kommer ihåg det han har gjort i Mexico.
”I have a great following in Mexico,” he said. “They know me well. I know that the crowd will be 80/20 percent in his favor. That only motivates me. I’ve always been the underdog, to tell the truth. And that motivates me to prove the opposite. I know I can, and I’ll do it.”
Werdum säger att han alltid visualiserar sina fighter, från själva fighten till post-intervjun.
“I imagine not just the fight, but also my interview with Joe Rogan, and what I’ll be saying,” he said. “I think about all that. What I want is to finish the fight early, whether it be with a knee, a knockout, a high kick or a submission. I imagine it will be on the ground, just like when I beat Fedor.”
Velasquez är känd för att vara en aggressiv striker och många tror att tungviktsmästaren kommer att vilja hålla det stående hela matchen, men Werdum är inte så säker på det.
“Many people have said that Cain Velasquez won’t be playing his usual game, that he’ll avoid the ground,” Sa han. “I think he won’t avoid the ground. I think he’ll do his usual game, which is to strike on the feet, go for a takedown, and stay on top. But I’ve always felt at ease when doing jiu-jitsu.”
“It’s a personal defense guard I learned here (in Porto Alegre). I defend myself well. So it will be a great opportunity if Cain Velasquez takes me to the ground, so I can catch him in a triangle, omoplata, or sweep him.”
