Stråviktaren Jessica Aguilar anser att det är dags att tona ner ödmjukheten och klargöra vem som är den främsta damen i divisionen. Oavsett vad som pågår i UFC.
Jessica Aguilar (17-4) är allmänt ansedd som den främsta damen i stråvikt. Hon är rankad på förstaplats i divisionen och trea pound-for-pound enligt Fight matrix. Aguilar håller även segrar mot tidigare topprankade Megumi Fuji samt mot Invictas stråviktsmästare Carla Esparza. Obesegrade brasilianskan Claudia Gadelha (11-0) är förmodligen den ende fightern i världen som kan mäta sig med Aguilar, men de två kommer inte mötas inom en snar framtid.
Gadhela, Esparza och resten av Invictas stråviktsdivision är på väg till UFC. Därmed finns det knappt några utmanare kvar varken i Invicta eller World series of fighting (WSOF). Att Aguilar tog titeln på WSOF8 i lördags sänder inget tungt budskap till divisionen. Det finns ingen konkurrens för ”Jag”. Medveten om att allt fokus numera ligger på divisionens framtid i UFC gick Aguilar på offensiven för att betona vem som är främsta damen i viktklassen:
”I don’t think I am the best, I am the best.” sa Aguilar till MMAfighting. ”I beat the best in the world. She (Esparza) can have the No. 2 spot, she can have her UFC belt, whatever she wants. I don’t even think she’s going to get it, I think Claudia (Gadelha) is going to beat her, but that’s another conversation. I don’t think I am the best, I am the best.”
Aguilar menade också att UFC-bältet inte ska misstolkas som ett bevis för att vara bäst i världen:
”I’m very humble, but I think I need to start talking the truth. I put a lot of hard work and dedicate a lot of time to be where I am today. This is my title. I am the No. 1 strawweight in the world. It doesn’t matter if someone has the UFC belt, but they don’t have the best in the world. The best in the world right now is with WSOF.”
Valet att gå till WSOF istället för Invicta eller UFC har inte riktigt förklarats, men Aguilar försäkrade att hon befann sig på rätt plats:
”I have a contract here and I believe I’m in the right place right now. Everything happens for a reason. Later, in the future, when I win more fights, we’ll see what happens. But now I’m very happy with the WSOF, and very happy for those that the UFC has given an opportunity. It’s a great thing. But I’m going to continue winning and proving why I’m the No. 1 strawweight in the world and then we’ll see what happens.”
