För oss svenska MMA-fans är Alexander Gustafsson långt ifrån okänd. Men man glömmer lätt att på andra sidan Atlanten så har svensken ännu inte etablerat sig som ett stort namn. Han har förvisso i princip alltid fått jobbet gjort i buren, men utanför buren är han relativt tyst av sig. Detta gör att han blivit överkörd i media av frontfigurer så som Chael Sonnen, Michael Bisping eller andra som har en tendens att låta väldigt mycket. Men en person som upptäckt Gustafssons talanger är hans träningspartner, UFC-fightern Joey Beltran.
”There’s going to have to be another Jon Jones, someone we haven’t even heard of, to come in here and smash [Jones],” säger Beltran till BJPenn.com. ”I don’t see anybody except for my boy Alexander Gustafsson, who could be the guy to do it. Not a lot of people know about Alex, but he could be the guy who gets the job done. Right now, I don’t see any of the established veterans beating Jones.”
Gustafsson är inbokad för en match mot MMA-veteranen Mauricio ”Shogun” Rua på UFC on Fox 5 den 8 december, en match som mycket väl kan komma att placera Gustafsson först i ledet på titeln om vinsten är imponerande. Något som Beltran är rätt övertygad om att det kommer ske.
“Honestly, I think Alex will kill him,” säger Beltran. “If Shogun comes in aggressive, Alex will KO him in the first round. If Shogun tries to be a bit more cerebral in his approach I think he will just prolong the inevitable. We are just barely starting to see Alex’s full potential, this is coming from someone who has to fight him on a daily basis when he’s in America and it sucks!”
