Welterviktaren Johny ”Bigg Rigg” Hendricks har sedan sin knockoutvinst mot Martin Kampmann på UFC 154 bett om att få möta UFCs obestridda welterviktsmästare Georges ”Rush” St-Pierre. Det var hans femte raka vinst, som även vann honom ”Knockout of the Night”-bonusen. Welterviktsmästaren kommer istället att möta Nick Diaz på UFC 158, ”Bigg Rigg” ställs mot Jake ”The Juggernaut” Ellenberger på samma gala.
”Bigg Rigg” har 14 vinster och en förlust i sin MMA-karriar, förlusten kom genom ett enhälligt domslut mot Rick Story på finalen av The Ultimate Fighter säsong 12. Hans motståndare på UFC 158 har skrapat ihop 28 vinster och sex förluster sedan sin proffsdebut i 2005. Han har vunnit sju av sina åtta senaste matcher i UFC, och besegrade senast veteranen Jay Hieron på UFC on FX 5.
I en intervju med Sherdog talade Hendricks om matchen mot Ellenberger, St-Pierre, och hur de är som motståndare.
“[Ellenberger] has shown that he can knock people out, and whenever you have that kind of power, you have to respect it,” sa Hendricks. “You have to know, ‘OK, this guy is a heavy-handed guy.’ … That’s what makes fighting people like that a little bit more of a challenge, a fun challenge, because no matter what happens, it might be the second or third round, you still have to worry about everything. It makes it that much more exciting.”
Hendricks anser inte bara att ”The Juggernaut” är en tuff motståndare, men han anser även honom vara en farligare motståndare än St-Pierre.
”It’s not that it’s more difficult but, it’s a little bit more dangerous, you know what I’m saying? Like I said, you don’t know which punch will be the last.
”With GSP, you know where he’s going to want to take it, you know he’s not going to want to stand with you. He’s going to want to go in there set up his jab, throw a few leg kicks, or he’s going to get you to the perimeter, to that black line, and you know a double leg is coming. Ellenberger, he is going to try to knock you out before he takes you down.”
