Efter Vitor Belforts uttalande om att det helt och hållet var UFC:s beslut att ersätta honom i huvudmatchen på UFC 173 kommer nu organisationens svar.
Det tog inte lång tid för Vitor Belfort (24-10) att förlora sin chans på mellanviktsmästaren Chris Weidman (11-0), efter Nevadas atletiska nämnds beslut att, enligt vissa, äntligen förbjuda behandlingen ´testosterone replacement therapy´ inom professionell MMA. Belfort har under senare tid växt fram till något av ett affischnamn för TRT, då han under sina tre senaste matcher, samtliga vinster, undergått behandlingen. Faktumet att brasilianaren, enligt läkare, skulle behöva runt 90 dagar för att återgå till normal träning utan TRT resulterade i att man ersatte honom med landsmannen Lyoto Machida (21-4), som nyligen stärkte sin position i viktklassen efter att ha besegrat Gegard Mousasi (34-4) på UFC Fight Night 36. Under gårdagen offentliggjorde delägare Lorenzo Fertitta sin, och UFC:s, ståndpunkt i frågan.
”At the end of the day, we have a fight to promote on May 24. Chris is going to defend his title, and you know how this business works: You’ve got to get commercials in two to three months early. We’ve got to get key art done. We’ve got a fight to promote and Vitor, because [NSAC] came down with this ruling, Vitor is going to have to comply with that, which he is going to. But we don’t know how long that process will take for him to get a license, whether it is two weeks or two months. We can’t be in limbo as a company. We need to promote a fight, so the most logical thing was for Vitor to get going with his process to file an application in Nevada, and once that gets done, we could revisit this thing. But we have a fight to promote on the 24th and we can’t sit around in limbo and wonder whether he’s going to be eligible to fight.”
NSAC:s beslut, som resulterade i bytet av motståndare, kan mycket väl ha varit en välsignelse i förklädnad, med tanke på de förmodade svårigheterna för Belfort att tillslut få tillstånd för tävling i Nevada, då han tidigare inte bara blivit avstängd för användning av testosteron vid tävling i staten, utan även ignorerat denna för att tävla utomlands.
Machida utmanar Weidman i huvudmatchen på UFC 173 den 24 maj. Belfort har nämnts som nästa utmanare, dock är det inget som i dagsläget är officiellt.
