Även om deras vägar inte ser ut att korsas inom en nära framtid så är Strikeforces sista mellanviktsmästare fortfarande ute efter en match mot den fightern som förolämpade honom offentligt.
Det har gått över ett år sedan den brittiske mellanviktaren Michael ”The Count” Bisping (24-5) förolämpade Strikeforces sista mellanviktsmästare Luke Rockhold (11-2) offentligt i en intervju. Bisping sa att han hade sparrats med Rockhold, och att han ansåg sig själv vara Strikeforce-mästare efter deras träningssession.
Efter att ha knockat Costas Philippou på UFC Fight Night 35 uttryckte Rockhold en önskan om att få möta Bisping. Det är en match Rockhold fortfarande söker, och han vill få britten att äta sina ord.
“I still want Bisping, of course” sa Rockhold till MMA Junkie. “I want both (Bisping and Vitor Belfort). I’m not one to talk shit unless it’s warranted, and Bisping went out of his way to make some false statements on national TV, so that gets under my skin, and I will keep talking until I get that fight.”
Härnäst kommer Bisping att ställas mot Tim Kennedy på finalen av The Ultimate Fighter: Nations. Om ”The Count” och Rockhold ska mötas behöver Bisping troligtvis ta sig förbi Kennedy. Rockhold berättade att han gärna vill möta Bisping, och därför hoppas att han vinner, men att han tror på seger för Kennedy.
Rockhold tog även tillfället i akt att berätta om den omtalade träningssessionen som Bisping talat om. Enligt den forne Strikeforce-mästaren så rörde det sig om flera omständigheter som påverkade deras sparring.
“I had a wrist injury and a couple things I was trying to let heal, and I wasn’t in the gym at all for five weeks,” sa han. “As I was stopping through (in Las Vegas), I was talking to the owner of RVCA and asked if anybody was training, and [the owner] mentioned Bisping. I was like, ‘Ah, I never really liked the guy.’ He was like, ‘He’s really not that bad.’ I ended up going down there, and he talked me into training with him.
“Bisping was two weeks away from his Brian Stann fight and was in great shape, and I went out the night before, hung out with a girl and drank a bunch of wine, and somehow made it into the gym in the morning. That’s what happened, and Bisping went on to talk about it. He has his opinion. One sparring session, and he was completely cool about it, and he gave me his number and said, ‘Call me any time.’ Then he went on to talk crap.”
Innan en match mellan Bisping och Rockhold kan bli av skulle britten behöva ta sig förbi Kennedy den 16:e april.
