Beslutet efter UFC 167, som innebar att mästaren George St. Pierre behöll sin titel, har fått väldigt mycket kritik och har av vissa till och med kallats för det sämsta beslutet i UFC:s historia. Mario Yamasaki, som dömde matchen, är såhär i efterhand beredd att hålla med kritikerna.
Efterspelet till huvudmatchen på UFC 167 mellan George St. Pierre (24-2) och Johny Hendricks (15-1) har nästan uteslutande handlat om det kontroversiella beslutet. St. Pierre blev tilldelad vinsten, en vinst som många anser Hendricks förtjänade. Det var ett delat beslut, där poängdomarna Sal D´Amato och Tony Weeks dömde matchen 48-47 i St. Pierres favör och Glenn Trowbridge var ensam om att döma 48-47 till Hendricks. Matchens domare, Mario Yamasaki, anser dock att domslutet var felaktigt.
”I’m inside the cage so I can’t see the fight as the judge sees it, but I thought Hendricks won the fight,” sa Yamasaki till MMAfighting i veckan. ”I thought Hendricks dominated the fight, it was brutal, and I was surprised when they gave St-Pierre the win. But I’m not the judge. I look at the fight with different eyes.”
Yamasaki själv anser att St. Pierre endast vann rond nummer fem, men betonar att han skulle vara tvungen att se om matchen för att vara helt säker på sin sak.
”The first round was slow and could have gone either way. Hendricks dominated the second one. The third was close and could also go either way, and the judges gave it to St-Pierre. When the fight was over, I thought Hendricks won every round except the last one,” sa veterandomaren. ”But I have to watch the fight again to analyze it as a judge.”
Yamasaki mottog en del kritik i efterhand, då han vid ett tillfälle stoppade matchen eftersom Hendricks tappat sitt munskydd. Han tycker dock inte kritiken är befogad och anser att han handlade helt enligt regelboken.
”The rules say that when the mouthpiece falls and the action continues, I can’t stop the fight,” sa han. ”Hendricks kept pressuring, but then they started working in the clinch, so I stopped it. I wouldn’t have stopped the fight if he kept punching. I’m there to protect the athlete. There’s no reason why I would let him hurt his mouth.”
UFC:s vd Dana White var väldigt kritisk mot Nevadas atletiska nämnd och domarna som gav segern till St. Pierre efter galan. Han uppgav att nämnden borde gå in och hantera situationen efter, vad han anser, var ett felaktigt beslut. Yamasaki ställer sig dock tvekande till Whites kunskaper om regelverket kring domaryrket i staten.
”As a promoter, (Dana White, reds. anm.) can say anything he wants,” uppgav han. ”He has never done a judging course, so he analyzes the fight as a fan. ”But (Nevadas atletiska nämnd, reds. anm.) needs to do only one judging course to set one criteria on how to analyze a fight. Every referee does his course, so they teach their way to judge a fight.”
