Under måndagens MMA Hour med Ariel Helwani meddelade Daniel Cormier att han gärna tar sig an Alexander Gustafsson i sin nästa match. Gustafsson som fick se sig själv besegrad av Anthony Johnson under UFC on FOX 14 som gick i Tele2 Arena under lördagsnatten.
Daniel Cormier som inledde det nya året med att ta sig an Jon Jones under UFC 182, en match som Jones vann via enhälligt domslut efter fem tuffa ronder. Med tanke på att både Daniel Cormier och Alexander Gustafsson kommer med en varsin förlust i deras bagage så känns det som en bra matchning, en match där vinnaren skulle med största sannolikhet bli nästa utmanare för titeln.
”He’s got the biggest name and we both coming of a loss so it makes sense so if thats the case, yes” sa Cormier.
Cormier fortsätter, ”If they say Daniel, you and Alexander, you fight and the winner will get a title shot against Anthony or Jon then yes. But i mean, any of those guys. I’ve never once picked a fight. The UFC has always called me and said ’Daniel, your fighting this guy’, ’your fighting this guy. When i fought Jon for the belt, but that was supposed to be Rashad Evans, my first fight in the division was supposed to be Rashad Evans so they always tell me. I’ve never turned down a fight, if i was gonna turn down any it would have been Rashad because we are buddies, but i dont turn down fights.”
”They say Daniel your gonna fight this guy, i say ok so if its Alexander Gustafsson i say ok, anyone else, ok. But it needs to be a guy that has name recognition were the people say, ’ok, if Daniel beats this guy lets see him fight for the championship again or hes very close’,” förklarade Cormier.
Cormier pratar lite om den lätta tungviktsdivisionen där alla redan har gått match mot Jones och tittar man på rankingen så finns det bara Phil Davis och Ovince St. Preux som är rankad sjätte respektive åttonde i UFC:s officiella ranking. Vinner Jon Jones mot Anthony Johnson så är det bara returmatcherna som känns logiska i dagsläget.
Cormier förklarar, ”Alexander and i realistically are two guys that can fight for the belt, once u get passed us there is not many, and Rashad but those are rematches. Rashad, Gustafsson and i are rematches and pass them and who are you gonna put in the cage with Jon. Bader, who also will be a rematch or Ovince St. Preux. The division is pretty top heavy and i think it will be one of us fighting for the belt so maybe the golden ticket is Gustafsson because if Rashad gets Gustafsson, maybe he gets the title shot if he wins. So maybe Gustafsson is the golden ticket.”
Daniel Cormier säger även att han skulle vilja gå match i hans hemstad Louisiana mot Alexander Gustafsson. Den galan ska däremot bli en Fight Night så att den blir av är nog svårt med tanke på att en match mellan de två skulle nog hamna på ett PPV-kort i Las Vegas eller på en större arena.
”Gus had a fight at home so i think its time for him to fight at someone elses home.”
