Det blev klart förra veckan Dreams lätt tungviktsmästare, och före detta mästare i Strikeforce; Gegard ”The Dreamcatcher” Mousasi kommer att möta Sveriges egna Alexander ”The Mauler” Gustafsson, i huvudevenemanget på UFC on Fuel 9, också känd som UFC Sweden 2, den sjätte april. Mousasi har fem vinster och en oavgjord match i sina sex senaste, och har besegrat bland andra Ovince St. Preux, Tatsuya Mizuno, och senast Mike Kyle i sina senaste matcher.
Enligt ”The Dreamcatcher” så är det mer som står på spel i matchen än potentiell vinst i UFC-debuten, men även en möjlig titelchans vid vinst, något han berättar i en intervju med MMA Weekly.
“I wanted to face a top opponent. He’s the No. 1 contender so fighting him would get me in line for a title shot. That’s the guy I want to fight,” berättade lätt tungviktaren om matchen. “Gustafsson, he’s on a six fight winning streak, it’s hard to deny him a title shot. It’s definitely for number one contender’s spot, that’s the way I feel.”
Mousasi förklarade även att det var Gustafssons vinst mot Mauricio ”Shogun” Rua på UFC on FOX 5 som var avgörande i armenierns beslutsfattande gällande sin första motståndare i UFC.
“It was him, (Lyoto) Machida or Shogun (Rua), and I mentioned them because I felt those were the names that fans would want to see, and they’re top contenders and obviously (Gustafsson) beat Shogun so he’s the number one, so I feel great fighting for this spot.”
UFCs vd Dana White hade tidigare sagt gällande matchen mellan ”Shogun” och Gustafsson att vinnaren skulle få en titelchans mot vinnaren av Jon Jones vs Chael Sonnen. Svensken kontrollerade matchen i stort sett, och tog hem ett enhälligt domslut, men det räckte tydligen inte för att få den titelchansen som utlovades. Mousasi är väl medveten om att ens prestation i oktagonen oftast är det viktigaste, och han är beredd på att imponera.
“If I go there and I perform well it’s much easier to get the fans all behind me. It’s all about performance, and I believe once that’s happened and then we can go to the next step.” sa ”The Dreamcatcher”.
Fans världen över har längtat efter Dream-mästarens UFC-debut länge. Mousasi själv verkar vara motiverad, och med en potentiell titelchans runt hörnet vid vinst, vill han inte göra fansen besvikna.
“I’m concentrating 100-percent and from that hopefully I will have that belt around my waist. That’s a big motivation, it’s within reach and it’s a possibility. That’s already giving me a lot of hope and that’s what I’m going for this year. We had a good start but now we are going for the big deal,” sa Mousasi.
“I want a fight so I can get a title shot. I don’t want to build anything up, or get build up fights or whatever. We’re going for the top and I’m happy that they are giving me the opportunity.”
