Efter att Lyoto Machida besegrade Dan Henderson så blev han lovad en titelmatch mot vinnaren av Jon Jones vs Chael Sonnen som sker på UFC 159 den 27 april i USA. Men nästa man i rankingen är svensken Alexander Gustafsson som besegrade Mauricio ”Shogun” Rua i december förra året, och var inplanerad att gå en match på UFC: Stockholm 2013 den 6 april. Han var dock tvungen att dra sig ur matchen på grund av en skada, och utmanade istället Machida i hopp om att få en snabb match.
Men Machidas manager Jorge Guimaraes är fast inställd på att det är en match mot vinnaren av Jones/Sonnen som gäller.
“Lyoto is on stand-by list waiting for the winner of Jon Jones vs Chael Sonnen,” säger Guimares till Lance!Net, via Fighters Only. ”I think it is almost impossible for Chael to win this bout but anything may happen. A fight is a fight but it has already been scheduled, there’s no history about it.”
“Lyoto is the number one contender and he is only waiting to see who is going to be the winner of this fight. He is not convinced about Jones… he is not convinced from that loss.”
Machida förlorade förra mötet mot Jones på UFC 140 i december 2011 efter att Jones satte en giljotin i slutet av den andra ronden. Machida har sedan dess besegrat Ryan Bader via en knockout, och nu senast även Henderson via ett delat domslut. Men med löftet om en titelmatch så känner dom att det är ganska ologiskt för dem att acceptera en utmaning från Gustafsson just nu.
“The fight between Jones and Sonnen is going to happen now, it doesn’t make sense to fight Alexander. We’re almost there,” berättar Guimares. ”If it were a little before, this fight could have already happened, but he just fought… and Dana White has made it clear that Lyoto is the number one. We’ll be waiting.”
