Michael Bisping var väldigt nära målet om att få en titelchans, och slutligen ta en titel, vid ett par tillfällen. Senast mötte han Chael Sonnen på UFC on Fox 2: Evans vs Davis i slutet av januari, och förlorade via ett enhälligt domslut. Innan det kom Bisping ifrån fyra raka vinster mot Dan Miller, Yoshihiro Akiyama, Jorge Rivera och Jason ”Mayhem” Miller. Men på grund av förlusten så rasade han ner till början igen för att få en titelchans.
Så nu när Hector Lombard skrivit kontrakt, och kommer att göra debut mot Brian Stann den 4 augusti på UFC on Fox 4. Går matchen bra för Lombard där så har UFCs VD Dana White lovat honom en titelchans. Detta löfte är inte Bisping speciellt nöjd över.
– (Lombard getting a title shot if he beats Brian Stann) does piss me off a little bit, you know? I’ve been slugging away in the UFC for six years now, fighting the best guys in the world, säger Bisping till MMADieHards. Just because Hector Lombard’s been knocking out part-time fighters who probably hold down jobs full-time and he’s been knocking out people that I haven’t got a clue who they are, I haven’t even heard of them, you know, while I’ve been knocking out the best fighters in the world and fighting the best consistently for six years and he’s going to come in from knocking out John the baker from around the corner and you know, he gets a title shot?
– I’m never going to get a title shot. Every time I get on cusp of it, I put together a good win streak and then I lose by a decision that maybe I think I should have won, but that’s down to me. I can’t blame my opponents for that, I should try to take them out and beat them too it, that’s what I’m trying to do. Now I’m fighting Tim Boetsch.
Trots förlusten mot Sonnen så anser sig Bisping ligga lika högt upp i rankingen som tidigare. Hans nästa match mot Boetsch är nu inplanerad för den 7 juli på UFC 148. Förlorar han den så lär han inte stanna i närheten av någon titelchans. Men han tycker heller inte att han egentligen förlorade mot Sonnen i januari, även om domarna själva tyckte annorlunda.
– I’ve watched the fight (vs. Chael Sonnen at UFC on FOX 2 on Jan. 28 in Chicago) several times and every time I watch it I think I’ve won … But listen, I’m not gonna cry and complain about it. It was a close fight, I think I won rounds one and two, he definitely got round three. So judges, whatever, they maybe favor the takedowns a bit much, I think the general consensus is that I won.
