Lättviktaren Michael ”The Menace” Johnson (16-8) berättar att han blev erbjuden att möta Donald ”Cowboy” Cerrone (28-6-1) vid UFC 187 men tackade nej till möjligheten. Nu anser han att det är bättre timing för att skapa matchen och att vinnaren i så fall förtjänar en titelmatch.
I helgen vann Donald ”Cowboy” Cerrone sin åttonde raka match i UFC efter att ha besegrat kanadensaren John ”The Bull” Makdessi via teknisk knockout i den andra ronden. Makdessi hoppade in på kort notis efter att ryssen Khabib ”The Eagle” Nurmagomedov skadat sitt knä, och nu berättar Michael ”The Menace” Johnson att han var den förste att bli erbjuden matchen men att han valde att tacka nej: ”“I was the first one they called, but unfortunately, timing’s everything, and I couldn’t take it. I was dealing with a little shoulder problem I had to get worked out on, and three weeks of me not really training isn’t enough time to get ready for a fight like ‘Cowboy”, säger Johnson till MMAjunkie Radio.
Med tanke på att Johnson nu står utan en motståndare så är amerikanen intresserad av ett möte med Cerrone där båda har full tid att förbereda sig. Även om Cerrone blivit lovad en titelmatch så kan den ske senare under året och ”Cowboy” har en tendens till att vilja hålla sig aktiv vilket gör att Johnson hoppas att matchen kan bli av. ”If I win my next fight, then it has to be the title fight; three of the top five guys are hurt, and they’re not going anywhere, so it would have to be me. If ‘Cowboy’ didn’t want to wait (for a title shot), I could easily see me and him fighting for a real No. 1 contender fight. But we’ll see what happens”.
