Nate Diaz har tidigare tävlat i weltervikt, med blandade resultat. Det ser ut som att viktminskningen är en jobbig process för Diaz, som inte anser att han kompenseras nog för sin viktnedgång.
Från mars 2010 till april 2011 tävlade Nate Diaz (16-9) som welterviktare i UFC. Han hade tidigare enbart tävlat som lättviktare men gick upp en viktklass efter att ha förlorat tre av sina fyra senaste. Det gick bra inledningsvis, med segrar över Rory Markham och Marcis Davis, sedan gick det mindre bra med tydliga förluster på domslut mot Dong Hyun Kim och Rory MacDonald. Med ett matchfacit å 2-2 i viktklassen återvände Diaz till lättvikt, men har på senare tid uttryckt en önskan om att återvända till weltervikt.
Diaz är nu inne på samma spår som tidigare, och är mest intresserad av att möta lättviktsmästaren Anthony Pettis samt att få en returmatch mot Josh Thomson, som slog Diaz på teknisk knockout på UFC on FOX 7. Thomson träffade med ett par höga sparkar som träffade klockrent, en av dem sänkte Diaz och matchen bröts. Diaz anser att han var med i matchen, även om han förstår varför den stoppades.
”They stopped the last fight, but I felt like I was still in the last fight,” sa Diaz till Las Vegas Sun. ”Obviously, they had to stop it. People have their opinions, and if I was watching from the outside, I probably would have said to stop it, too. But I remember being in that fight and winning it, and being like, ‘what the (expletive), you stopped the fight?’
If he wanted to fight me tomorrow, I’d be a little more enthusiastic about fighting him because me and him know what was going on in that fight.”
Det som håller Diaz kvar i lättvikt är potentiella matcher mot Thomson och Pettis, då han anser att det inte är värt att klara lättviktsklassen flera gånger om året för de pengarna han får.
”I lost to Thomson and Anthony Pettis is the champ. They’re supposed to be the hot shit right now. Those guys are the guys to beat and on top of it.
I was ready to go to 170 pounds. I’m over making weight and all this. I don’t feel I get paid good enough to lose weight all year long. I can make the weight no problem, but I wish I was getting compensated a little better for it. At the same time, I wasn’t going to leave this division letting those two fuckers run the show.”
