Under natten så kommer den allra första matchen för kvinnor att anordnas i UFC då Ronda Rousey tar sig an Liz Carmouche men det fanns tills nyligen inga andra kvinnliga fighters kontrakterade. För lite mindre än två veckor sen så blev det klart att Miesha Tate och Cat Zingano möts på finalen av The Ultimate Fighter 17 och dagen efter det att Alexis Davis och Sarah McMann skrivit på men ännu inte fått några matcher bokade. Ett namn som det har varit tyst om är Sarah Kaufman som i samma veva blev bokad för att möta Leslie Smith på Invicta FC 5.
Sarah Kaufman deltog idag i BJpenn.com:s radioprogram och gick då ut med nyheten att hon har ett kontrakt med UFC men har möjlighet att gå match både i UFC och Invicta. UFC brukar vanligtvis inte tillåta att man går matcher i någon annan organisation och Kaufmann vet inte hur länge det kommer tillåtas “I don’t know how long [the UFC will allow female fighters to fight for Invicta] and it depends on how the UFC’s women’s division goes but Shannon Knapp has a great relationship with both Dana White and Sean Shelby. I’m on loan from the UFC to Invicta right now,”
“ZUFFA has first rights so they can say yes or no [to someone fighting in Invicta] for you but they are giving permission. It’s a great relationship to be able to work for both in case one or the other doesn’t have a fight for you at that time so you don’t have to wait for a fight for too long.”
Hon bryr sig inte om att UFC lägger mycket fokus på Ronda Rousey utan tror att den kvinnliga bantamviktsdivisionen snart kommer att handla mindre om Ronda och mer om talangfulla kvinnliga fighters: “It’s a huge moment for females in the sport and I do have a little bit of jealousy that I am not in that first spot of course but overall it’s an incredible thing. To go from five years ago to where we are now is amazing. They’re really pushing Ronda Rousey and I want to congratulate Liz Carmouche for getting this opportunity,”
“The fact that they are also announcing more female fights and signing other fighters is a very positive sign while they go through a trial period to see how the fans react. I’m 100% sure that fans are going to love to see the females fighting in the UFC. We all come to fight and maybe this is bringing out our cattiness but we want to prove everyone wrong and that we do deserve to be here, even though we’ve already proven it more than enough at this point.”
UFC har lagt ner mycket pengar på marknadsföring för Rousey samtidigt som Dana White flera gånger har sagt att det är ”The Ronda Rousey Show. Flera fans har varit oroliga att en eventuell vinst för Carmouche skulle kunna få hela divisionen att läggas ned. Kaufman säger att allt är möjligt i den här sporten men att fansen inte behöver oroa sig: “I definitely think there is a possibility that ZUFFA and the UFC will [disband the women’s division if Ronda loses] but I know that Joe Silva and Sean Shelby are super supportive of the females. Dana White has come along too and has noticed that there are all of these talented females all over the world that are ready to fight,” Kaufman said.
“Regardless of the outcome it will be an exciting fight and whether Ronda wins or loses she’s still going to have that publicity behind her and still market her and give her a rematch if she does lose. I believe that we’re still going to be around, no problem.”

Sarah Kaufman hade ett matchfacit på 8-0 när hon i sin debut i Strikeforce besegrade Miesha Tate via domslut. Efter en vinst mot Shayna Bazler så fick hon chansen att bli den första kvinnliga bantamviksmästaren i Strikeforce i ett möte med japanskan Takayo Hashi. Matchen vann hon via domslut och hon försvarade sedan sitt bälte med en spektakulär knockout via slam mot Roxanne Modafferi. I sitt nästa försvar bokades hon för att möta Marloes Coenen men åkte då på sin första förlust i karriären när Coenen i den tredje ronden fick in en armbar. Hon har sedan dess vunnit tre raka matcher mot bland annat Liz Carmouche och Alexis Davis men även förlorat mot Ronda Rousey i titelmatchen som gick i augusti förra året.
Kaufmans nästa match är den 5 april mot Leslie Smith på Invicta FC 5.
