Ett slag mot MMA har nu genomförts, men UFC har tagit upp kampen i striden om MMA i Boston.
Det är ingen hemlighet att UFC Fight Night 26 i Boston medförde en del problem. Kryphål i Massachusetts lagstiftning gjorde det problematiskt för utländska fighters att få tillstånd att tävla, bombningen i staden tidigare i år var fortfarande färskt i Boston-bornas minnen och tecken på tekniska problem med lokalisering av tv-kanalen visade sig några dagar innan debuten. Det var dock ett förslag om ny lagstiftning som slog igenom. Stadsfullmäktige Steve Murphy har nu genomfört lagen som förbjuder minderåriga från att gå på MMA, rapporterar MMA Junkie.
“Cage fighters at the amateur and professional levels have competed in public stadiums and on television bearing Neo-Nazi messages in their tattoos or on their clothing,” skriver Murphy i motionen. “and extensive research has associated exposure to media violence with a variety of physical and mental health problems for children and adolescents, including aggressive and violent behavior, bullying, desensitization to violence, fear, and depression.”
Det dröjde inte länge för att UFC skulle släppa ett officiellt uttalande om ärendet, och menar att Murphy genomförde en lag som var full av misstag och missvisande budskap.
”The UFC organization finds it shocking that Councilor Murphy would present such a misleading document for consideration to the City Council. Councilor Murphy’s resolution demonstrates a complete lack of understanding about what mixed martial arts is, the amazing world class athletes that compete in the sport, and the many benefits it brings to a community.
”There is clearly a reason why MMA is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Consequently, it is unfortunate that Councilor Murphy’s actions caused the Boston city council to be manipulated by a union based in Las Vegas, Nevada.
”We would hope that the City Council, once it learns the truth about MMA and all of the positive aspects of the sport, would consider revoking this non-binding resolution.”
Tjänstemän inom UFC meddelade att UFC Fight Night 26 drog in ”Miljontals dollar” i intäkter för Boston, och menade att de gav en positiv bild av staden.
Det är för tillfället osannolikt att stadsfullmäktige Murphy drar tillbaka lagstiftningen, men med nog med motivation fans och Boston-bor finns det en möjlighet.
