Alexander Gustafsson vs Antônio Rogerio ”Little Nog” Nogueira blev bokade som ett huvudevent för UFC: Sweden den 14 april, men den motståndaren för Alex var inte UFCs första val. Från början blev Little Nog inbokad att möta Dan Henderson, men Hendo tackade nej till matchen och UFC gick vidare med att boka Nogueira mot Alex istället.
Varför han tackade nej sa han inte så mycket om då, men nu har han kommit ut med ett officiellt uttalande.
”I was under the impression that [Dana White] was still kinda on the fence on whether he was gonna put me in front of Rashad (Evans) or not,” säger Henderson till Clinch Gear Radio. ”That’s assuming Rashad wins. He did offer me a fight with little Nogueira and I didn’t think the fans would be interested in that fight and it’s not as much time as I’d like to prepare for a five round fight so I told him I’d wait and see what happens with the Rashad fight. I’d like to fight Jones now rather than if I took that fight with Little Nog. I wouldn’t be fighting Jones for another eight, ninth months. I’m okay waiting a little bit. It was more about having the time to prepare and I did inquire to say hey, I would be interested in doing it if it was a three round fight, I could have time to prepare.”
Henderson som numera är 41 år gammal börjar komma till slutet av sin karriär, även om Randy Couture fortsatte sin karriär tills han var 47. Det Henderson tidigare sagt är att han vill ha ett bälte innan han lägger ner sin karriär, och då är givetvis ett möte med Jon Jones som just nu sitter på bältet i lätt tungvikt något att föredra. Kanske kan det bli så, men han lär behöva gå igenom Davis eller Evans innan dess. Om nu inte UFC ger honom lite gräddfil först.
