UFC 151 förlorade Dan Henderson när han drog sig ur en skada, och Jon Jones stod där utan en motståndare. Chael Sonnen ställde upp för att möta Jones. Jones tackade nej, och eftersom det inte fanns någon annan lockande match på matchkortet så ställde UFC in galan. Den historien har ni alla hört. Jones blev istället sedan inbokad för att möta Vitor Belfort på galan efteråt, UFC 152. Men där har vi inte hört så mycket mer, Sonnen fick möjligheten på UFC 151 men inte UFC 152. Varför? UFCs VD Dana White förklarat att det var för att Sonnen helt enkelt inte var redo för att gå en match på UFC 152.
”Well, I can tell you this. People talk a lot of [expletive], but nobody is too excited to jump around and fight Jon Jones right now,” säger White på telefonpresskonferensen inför UFC 152. ”You know, guys were out there saying I want the title shot next, I want the title shot next and when it came time for the to get the title shot they turned it down. Vitor Belfort is the only guy that called, he was blowing up Lorenzo [Fertitta] up, called him and said I want this fight with Jon Jones so bad. We respect that, we like that, so Vitor got the fight.”
Chael Sonnen didn’t have enough time to train for that fight [against Jon Jones at UFC 152]. Ya know, Chael stepped up last minute and accepted the fight and everything else and I have nothing but respect for him for doing it. But Vitor Belfort was already in camp, Vitor was already in training, Vitor begged for the fight and it made more sense.”
Så nu är istället Belfort mannen som kliver in i buren för att möta Jones på UFC 152 den 22 september.
