Paige ”12 Gauge” VanZant vann under UFC on FOX 15 sin andra match i UFC genom att besegra Felice ”Lil Bulldog” Herrig via ett enhälligt domarbeslut i deras stråviktsmöte. Vid galans efterföljande presskonferens talade organisationens VD, Dana White, om hur stor han tror att VanZant kan bli samtidigt som de inte vill stressa 21-åringen alltför snabbt.
Paige ”12 Gauge” VanZant (5-1) har fått en minst sagt lovande start på sin MMA-karriär. Den kvinnliga stråviktaren vann sin andra raka match i UFC och efter båda fighterna har hennes namn varit ett av de flitigast använda i media. Dana White talade efter UFC on FOX 15 om att hennes popularitet är enorm och att hon jämför hennes snabba uppgång med den irländska fjäderviktaren Conor McGregors: ”It’s almost like the Conor McGregor thing. The guy bursts out of nowhere, explodes onto the scene and backs it up. And Paige VanZant did tonight, too. She looked unbelievable. And she is. She’s one of those people that has that thing. She’s got that thing that I always talk about — that thing you can’t teach. Everybody in my dressing room tonight wanted to meet her. They were like, ’We want to meet Paige VanZant.’ She’s got that thing man. And she can fight”.
Trots alla lovord understryker White att VanZant bara är 21 år gammal och relativt oerfaren vilket gör att de inte tänker ge henne nästa titelchans utan att det istället blir någon som är rankad bland de 10 bästa i divisionen: ”The problem with Paige now is she’s young and she’s 5-1 now, but she’s probably going to be ranked in the low top 10 now. She’s gonna be 9, 10, 8. She’s gonna be in that ballpark somewhere. We’ll see how we move her. She’s definitely in the danger zone now. She’s 21 years old. She doesn’t have a lot of experience. But boy, she’s a scrapper. She comes in and she fights. Taking on a veteran like Felice and doing what she did to Felice tonight”.
VanZant själv är också medveten om att hon inte vill gå för snabbt fram utan har tålamod att vänta på en titelchans. ”Of course I’m gonna take any fight that’s offered to me. But with all the strawweights coming up and with the ranking system being so new, I think we will see a little more accurate ranking of who’s available in the title shot. I have a lot more to prove and we’ll go from there”. Vem tror ni att hon får möta härnäst?
