Blackzilians har varit ett av de mest framgångsrika lägren under åren men nu ser det ut som att deras saga håller på att få ett slut. Enligt en av deras första medlemmarna, den före detta lätt tungviktsmästaren Rashad Evans, så håller lägret på att splittras.
När ett antal fighters bestämde sig för att lämna American Top Team i 2011 så blev det starten för Blackzilians. Kort efter att lägret grundats började fler och fler atleter att gå med och bland annat Rashad Evans (19–5–1) blev del av gymmet.
När Blackzilians tog in fighters utifrån för att träna blev det nästan av en trend att slagskämparna gillade stället så pass mycket att de bestämde sig för att stanna kvar. Det var bland annat så Michael Johnson (17–11) blev del av lägret som återfinns i Boca Raton, Florida.
Bland instruktörerna återfinns bland annat den före detta UFC-fightern och BJJ-coachen Jorge Santiago (25–12) samt den dekorerade brottaren Greg Jones. Sedan starten har även ett stort antal välkända UFC-fighters varit del av gymmet:
- Anthony Johnson (22–5)
- Vitor Belfort (25–13)
- Eddie Alvarez (28–5)
- Ryan Jimmo (19–5)
- Stefan Struve (28–8)
Nu säger dock Evans i det senaste avsnittet av The MMA Hour att gymmet är på väg att splittras upp i mindre delar:
“The truth of the matter is, the team is splintered, the team is fragmented,” sade Evans. “It just became a very hard thing for Glenn (Robinson) to kind of keep his grasp as far as keeping everyone together. Henri [Hooft] wanted to throw his brand into his own thing and it just wasn’t matching up with where Glenn wanted to go. That’s part of the fragment, but another part of it was that we didn’t have a gym anymore.
“Our gym was sold, and Glenn was supposed to build another gym and I guess they moved into a temporary gym. There was some kind of falling out with the temporary gym, so then part of the team stayed at the temporary gym and more than half of the team went with Henri. I was one of those guys that went with Henri.”

Evans fortsätter med att säga att han tillsammans med bland annat ”The Menace” Johnson har börjat träna 20 minuter utanför Boca Raton med bland annat Henri Hooft och brottningscoachen Jones.

Mycket tjafs ledde till missnöje inom gruppen
När Evans blev tillfrågad vad som föranledde splittringen pekade han bland annat på inre konflikter i gruppen:
“I mean, at the end of the day, I got so sick and tired of going into the gym and having to put out these fires, and there was so much drama, and everybody jockeying and pushing for position,” sadeEvans till Ariel Helwani. “I was just like, yo, I just want to train, man. And there’s a lot of other guys that just want to train, and that’s what the team was made for. So we could have a great training environment. But you start bringing everything else into it and all the drama, it just got exhausting.
“Now, the state of the Blackzilians…I guess there really is no Blackzilians. It’s all in the namesake, but for the most part everybody — or most of the people who was training with the Blackzilians — we’re still training together.”
Evans var också öppen med att träningslägrets grundare Glenn Robinson inte klarade av att hålla allting tillsammans och att det i slutet gjorde att gymmet började gå under:
“I think that, you know, Glenn — he’s not a bad guy, and I don’t want to say anything bad about him — I just think he wasn’t honest with himself about what he can and can’t do, and he didn’t say no enough. And at the end of the day, the fight game eats and chews you up if you’re not strong enough and resilient enough to deal with everything goes along with it. And that’s one thing that I learned. It’s very unforgiving. And if you’re not willing or able to do what you need to do, and say no, or stand up for yourself, or be able to make the right choices, you’re going to get passed up and passed over.
“I think that a big part of the Blackzilians is due to the fact that Glenn failed in some respects.”
Han ville dock inte gå så långt som att säga att träningslägret är slut för alltid:
“I don’t want to say it’s not a thing anymore,” sade Evans. “I don’t want to put the stamp on it to say it’s not a thing anymore. But, I mean, it’s definitely not what it used to be. That’s for sure.”
