Tito ”The People’s Champ” Ortiz, förre detta känd som Tito ”The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Ortiz hade en extremt viktig match mot Ryan Bader på UFC 132. Han gick en match mot kontraktet, och han kom ut som en vinnare. Han besegrade Bader via en submission tidigt i den första ronden, och lyckades släpa sig själv in till relevans igen.
Matchen var så pass viktig för honom att han till och med har bytt smeknamn för att hedra händelsen:
”My whole legacy, my whole career depended on that fight. I trained really hard and had some great guys around me training with me,” säger Ortiz till ESPN. ”It was almost like winning my world title. A lot of people didn’t believe in me. A lot of people couldn’t believe that I was still here. I had neck surgery, lower back surgery and a lot of athletes don’t compete after that. I showed that I’m able to compete against the best guys in the world, and I think that will help show people that if they believe in themselves, if they believe in their dream, they can accomplish anything. That’s why I changed my name to The People’s Champ. I want everyone to know that I’m here for the fans. I want them to know that they can bounce back from anything.”
Efter matchen mot Bader har Ortiz åter igen hamnat i förlorarbåset då han blev besegrad av Rashad Evans på UFC 133 i början av augusti. Nu har han dock en ny match inplanerad mot Antonio ”Little Nog” Rogerio Nogueira på UFC 140 den 10 december, och ännu en gång slåss han för relevans, och ett kontrakt, i företaget.
Det intressanta i den här nyheten är ändå det smeknamnet som han gav sig själv – Folkets mästare. Trots att han inte haft en titel sedan 2003.
