En lite udda sak hände under UFC 205. Conor McGregor krävde att få ha två bälten på sig i oktagonen efter sin historiska vinst och det var Tyron Woodleys bälte som fick plockas upp. På The MMA Hour berättar Woodley om denna händelse.
Efter sin historiska vinst mot lättviktsmästaren Eddie Alvarez (28-5) då Conor McGregor (21-3) blev mästare i två av UFCs viktklasser krävde han att han skulle få ha två bälten med sig i oktagonen efter vinsten. Hans fjäderviktsbälte var inte där så då blev det welterviktsmästaren Tyron Woodley (16-3-1) som fick låna ut sitt bälte.
Woodley var inte särskilt nöjd med att behöva göra det. Under intervjun med Ariel Helwani under måndagens The MMA Hour berättar welterviktsmästaren om hela lustiga situationen och det var inte för McGregors skull som han lånade ut sitt bälte.
”I’m a good businessman. I love [UFCs ”Vice President of Athlete Development”] Reed Harris. Reed Harris is the man. He’s always shot me straight, good or bad, and I love Reed Harris.”
”Reed is the one who that, his hands grabbed the belt, took it to the cage…Reed Harris is the man. I love Reed Harris.”
Det var en lite lustig timing enligt Woodley. Han förberedde sig för en fotosession backstage efter den oavgjorda matchen mot Stephen Thompson (13-1-1) och det fanns inte på kartan att han skulle vilja genomföra fotosessionen utan sitt bälte.
”I was a little frustrated that at that current moment that they needed it, because I needed to take my pictures — you know the pictures they take behind the stage if you win? I wasn’t able to do those pictures because they wanted me to take it without the belt. And it would be a cold day in hell before I’d take any other picture without the belt or come out of the blue corner again. I didn’t get a chance to take those pictures because that moment was going on.”
Även om det inte var så jätteroligt för Woodley att vara med om detta så fick han i alla fall ett tack från UFC för att han lånade ut bältet.
”The told me how great of an individual I was that I would be willing to do something like that. Especially after all the wolf tickets that was sold by Conor McGregor, that I would be willing to ever do something like that, and that it just shows the kind of man and character I am. But I’ve been making some calls, and hopefully they financially express their gratitude as well.”
Nu återstår det att se om McGregor får en chans att slåss om welterviktsbältet mot Woodley eller om det blir en returmatch mellan Woodley och Thompson. Woodley tänker i alla fall inte vänta på match mot McGregor, en match som troligen kan bli av om irländaren vill att UFC ska ge honom den matchen, utan han har siktet inställt på antingen en returmatch mot Thompson eller match mot Demian Maia (24-6).
”I mean, if he wants the fight they’re going to make the fight happen. He’s at the point right now where they’re going to do what he wants to do. I’m not holding out and waiting for a fight with him. There’s a lot of guys. You know, Demian Maia is a worthy opponent. Some people believe that Wonderboy deserves a rematch.”
