Svensken Alexander Gustafsson är i förberedelsefasen för den största matchen i hans liv. Den 8 december kliver han in i buren på UFC on Fox: Henderson vs Diaz med MMA-legenden Mauricio ”Shogun” Rua för att göra om vem som kan komma bli nästa person på lätt tungviktstiteln. Blir matchen imponerande så kan vinnaren kliva förbi kön och få en titelchans mot vinnaren mellan Jon Jones och Chael Sonnen som i sin tur möts den 27 april. Men för närvarande är Gustafsson fokuserad på Shogun.
”It’s the toughest fight in my career so far,” säger Gustafsson på Inside MMA. ”He is a though guy. Shogun is Shogun you know. I’ve been looking up to him since I was a kid, since I started to follow MMA. I will try to stay on the outside and try to use my range, use my footwork but you never know in a fight. Sometimes you have to do different stuff and take the initiative but it will be a great fight for the fans. You know, everyone says that you should take one fight at the time. And I’m focusing on Shogun right now.”
Men även om Gustafsson för närvarande fokuserar på just Shogun, så är det det där guldpläterade titelbältet som hägrar.
”I want a fight with Jon. That’s my main goal – to bring the belt home to Sweden,” berättar Gustafsson. ”That’s what i want to do. But I never look past an opponent you know. But when I beat Shogun I will be more than prepared to fight for a title. And that is what I’m going to do.”
Gustafsson har förvisso hållit på med boxningen länge, och berättar att han startade boxas vid tio års ålder. Först 2006, nio år senare, så tog han sina första haltande steg in i MMA-världen.
”It was in 2006, I was 19 years old and I went to a MMA gym with a friend and since then I’ve been doing it. I started in a beginning group and they thought i had some pretty good skills so they moved me to a pro team. They were good guys so I started to develop.”
Men trots att han har börjat bygga på sina kunskaper om jiu-jitsu och brottningen så är det ändå boxningen som ligger honom varmt om hjärtat.
”My favorite technique is the knockouts. To stay on the feet and throw bombs and give the fans a good fight. Thats what I like to do. [Shogun] is a legend like I said before. He is really though. He is the guy, you know, the more you punch him the better he gets. He just gets more dangerous for every round. So it’s by far the biggest test so far.”
