Flera har ansett att UFCs val att sparka ”The Kansas City Bandit” var alldeles för strängt, det är en åsikt en av sportens veterandomare delar.
Det är idag känt att den forne UFC-fightern Jason ”The Kansas City Bandit” High (18-5) sparkats av UFC på grund av följderna till knockoutförlusten mot Rafael Dos Anjos på UFC Fight Night 42. High var missnöjd med att domaren Kevin Mullhal brutit matchen efter att ”The Kansas City Bandit” sänkts och tagit emot ett flertal obesvarade slag. När han reste sig upp knuffade High Mullhal i frustration och gick sedan därifrån. Detta resulterade i att New Mexicos idrottskommission stängt av High i ett helt år och bötfällt honom på cirka 1,900 dollar. Utöver detta sparkades han av UFC, vars vd Dana White var extremt missnöjd med High, trots att den sistnämnde bad om ursäkt offentligt via Twitter.
“He’s cut,” meddelade UFCs vd Dana White. “I’m going to cut him. I look at that the way (Paul) Daley put his hands on his opponent after a fight was over. You don’t ever, ever fucking touch a referee, ever. You’re done here. He’s been apologizing on Twitter, but he’s done.”
MMA-domaren ”Big” John McCarthy, en av sportens mest respekterade och erfarna domare, är dock kritisk mot detta beslutet. Han ursäktar inte vad High gjorde men anser att hans straff var betydligt grövre än handlingen som orsakade det. Utöver det ifrågasätter han även om UFC hade handlat på samma vis om det var en betydligt mer känd fighter som begick samma misstag. Detta berättade McCarthy för Submission Radio, transkriberat av MMA Mania.
”Absolutely there has to be varying degrees of punishment, but it has to be a punishment that is, you know, it evenly matches the crime, and the crime was pretty minimal. Jason put his hands on Kevin and kinda pushed him away. It was wrong. To be taken out of the UFC – I understand what Dana White is doing… Now the question is, if Jon Jones would have done the same thing, would he have kicked Jon Jones out of the UFC? He wouldn’t have. Now on top of, you know Dana removing him from the UFC, the New Mexico State Athletic commission has, you know suspended him for 1 year. That’s one year of time that he cannot make a living fighting. That’s a lot. You know, you’re having people take away your ability to make a living, based on one act. Sometimes we as human beings, we do things off of emotion that we normally wouldn’t do. Do I think he should have been punished? Yes. He should have had his hand slapped, he should have gotten, you know a five month suspension, he should have been fined, we’ll say twenty-five hundred, five thousand dollars. That’s gonna hurt him, he’s gonna feel it, but I think that overall Jason got treated very harshly for what happened.”
