Efter vinsten på UFC 201 är Tyron Woodley numera världsmästare i weltervikt. Han är dock inte nöjd än – han vill bli känd som den bästa welterviktaren någonsin. Därför tänker han knocka Georges St-Pierre och Nick Diaz, medan Stephen ”Wonderboy” Thompson får vänta.
Många hade räknat med att Robbie Lawler (27-11) skulle försvara sin titel, men Tyron ”The Chosen One” Woodley (16-3) skrällde och blev divisionens nya mästare.
Att bältet bytte ägare ser ut att ha rört till det för Stephen ”Wonderboy” Thompson (13-1) som kallt räknade med att få nästa titelchans. Woodley har nämligen andra motståndare i tankarna. På The MMA Hour försvarade Woodley sin ståndpunkt.
”Wonderboy’s words just bit him in the butt. He said that Robbie Lawler would take this fight. He felt that the fans would want to watch Robbie Lawler fight against Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, that it would be a more exciting fight, that I would fade in the later rounds and he felt like Robbie Lawler was going to take it home.
When he makes those statements, and you’re not the money fight, he wrote a check his ass couldn’t cash. So now he’ll get his chance to fight Robbie Lawler and I’ll go out and I’ll prove I’m the very, very best in the world by fighting the Hall of Famers.”
Att själv komma in i UFCs Hall of Fame verkar vara Woodleys agenda härnäst. Genom att knocka Georges St. Pierre (25-2) och Nick Diaz (26-9) vill han bevisa att han är den bästa welterviktaren genom tiderna.
”I want to say I’m the best in the world. I do believe Nick Diaz has brought enough attention to the sport, raised enough eyebrows, put enough butts in the seats, sold enough pay-per-view buys. Secondly, Georges St-Pierre is the best of all-time. If Georges St-Pierre decides that he wants to come back and he’s interested in fighting me, which he is, that’s going to be my No. 1 pick.
But I would like to fight both of them. Because after those two fights, nobody can ever say I’m not one of the best welterweights on the planet Earth. If I knock out Robbie Lawler, GSP and Nick Diaz, I pretty much cemented myself in the UFC Hall of Fame.”
Det vore knappast någon aldrig tidigare skådad skandal om UFC bokade någon annan än Thompson för nästa titelfight. Till exempel verkar trettonderankade Dan Henderson (32-14) möta mellanviktsmästaren Michael Bisping (29-7) om bältet i höst.
Enligt Woodley är inte det mer än rätt att mästaren får bestämma vem nästa motståndare blir.
”When you get to this point, in my opinion, you can start calling some of the shots. Georges St-Pierre said he wanted to fight me, and I’m going to say yes.
Håller ni med ”The Choosy One” eller bör ”Wonderboy” äntligen få chansen?
