Under sin tid i UFC lyckades före detta mästaren i lätt tungvikt Chuck Liddell (21-8) avsluta tolv matcher på KO/TKO. Näst efter Anderson Silva, har ingen UFC-fighter knockat fler motståndare. Liddell som fortfarande är anställd av UFC under titeln ”Vice president of business development”, funderar på om dagens fighters har samma önskan att avsluta matchen.
I en intervju för U-T San Diego uttryckte ”The iceman” en oro för att UFC-fighters är mer försiktiga idag än de var på Liddells tid:
”I’d really have to talk to the guys to see if that’s really what they’re doing. I see it like guys are trying a lot more to just get their win so they can get their next fight. When we were doing it, it was a lot more about just going out and fighting. I hate hearing in a UFC corner ‘you won the first four rounds, just stay away from him this round.’ The guy doesn’t have a knockout punch, hasn’t taken you down the whole fight, why do you have to go be afraid of him? Go out and win! Make it exciting, go knock him out, finish the fight.”
Uppmaningen om att avsluta matcher är inget nytt. Dana White är känd för att predika mantrat ”don’t leave it in the hands of the judges” vid varje tillfälle som erbjuds. Men trenden pekar mot mer poängsegrar, i synnerhet i titelmatcher. Av UFC:s nio regerande mästare har endast tre stycken, Jon Jones, Anderson Silva och Ronda Rousey, avslutat motståndaren i sitt senaste titelförsvar.
