Efter Rick Hawns vinst över Ron Keslar på Bellator 109 står det nu klart att det blir Hawn och Douglas Lima som slåss om Bellators welterviktstitel, som för närvarande inte har en ägare. Detta eftersom mästaren Ben Askren nyligen blivit släppt av företaget, något som förvånade många, inte minst Lima.
Ben Askrens (12-0) kontrakt med Bellator gick nyligen ut och man valde att inte förlänga med den obesegrade welterviktmästaren. Vd Bjorn Rebney hade detta att säga efter det något förvånande beslutet.
“I’ve said it many times, Ben’s a completely one-dimensional fighter who is utterly dominant in that dimension,” berättade Rebney. “I had a number of discussions with Ben, and it became clear it was time for both parties to move in different directions.”
Dimensionen Rebney pratar om är självklart brottning, Askren är som känt en väldigt dekorerad amatörbrottare. Hans framgångar inom MMA och Bellator kan till stor del, om inte helt, tillskrivas just brottningen. En som blev förvånad över beslutet var en annan Bellator-fighter, Douglas Lima (25-5), som ska möta Rick Hawn (18-2) om den vakanta titeln nästa år. Dock förstår han logiken bakom Rebney och Bellators beslut.
”I was kind of surprised because he was the undefeated champion and a really tough fighter,” sa Lima till MMAFighting. ”But he didn’t sell his fights because of his fighting style and I think that’s really important for the promotion. I believe that’s the reason why Bellator didn’t want to fight that much for him.”
Limas enda förlust i organisationen kom mot just Askren, under Bellator 64. Trots detta känner brasilianaren inte något behov för revansch, hans enda mål är Bellator-titeln.
”It doesn’t matter for me if he’s in or out of Bellator,” uppgav han. ”Either way, I’m going to fight for the title. That’s my goal. Whoever it is, I’ll be ready.” Han fortsatte ”It’s not my fault that he’s out of Bellator and I just want my shot at the title. People can say whatever they want. They can say that (Askren, reds. anm.) is the real champion after I beat Hawn, but that doesn’t bother me at all. I just want to beat whoever they put in front of me.”
Limas kommande motståndare Rick Hawn vann nyligen welterviktsturneringens final mot Ron Keslar (11-4), efter en imponerande KO i tredje ronden. Brasilianaren var på plats för att titta på matchen och han förutser att Hawn kommer bli en tuff utmaning, dock ser han sig själv gå vinnande ut striden.
”I expected a more competitive fight,” berättade han. ”I didn’t know much about Keslar but I saw that he’s tough and has good jiu-jitsu. But Hawn was the favorite and showed it why in the fight. It was a beautiful knockout and made me more excited to fight for the title against him. It’s going to be a great fight for the fans, I can assure you that. My dream is to win that title,” fortsatte Lima ”I’ve lost my first attempt and that made me hungrier. I won’t stop now. I’m a man on a mission and I will accomplish it. It’s a dream for me. I’m the MFC champion and I want to do the same at Bellator. I will bring this title home for myself, my family and fans.”
Lima och Hawn möts om welterviktstiteln i början av nästa år.
