Efter Alexander Gustafssons dominanta vinst mot Thiago Silva på UFC: Sweden i mitten av april började diskussionerna om det kanske är dags för en titelmatch för Gustafsson, även om det är en del som fortfarande tvekar. Vissa säger att han inte är redo, medan andra gärna ser honom uppe i toppen mot Jon Jones i lätt tungvikt. En som däremot sätter Gustafsson högst upp i listan på potentiella motståndare som kan besegra Jones är Frank Mir.
– You know what, if you call the names that could possible compete with Jones I’ll put [Gustafsson] on the top of the list, säger Mir till MMA30. If any body would want to ask me who they thought you know. Right now Jones is the king, but if you say who will come up i really think it will be Gustafsson. You know, I’ve seen him over at Roberts, the guy is incredible long and tall himself. And really strong! You know i didn’t get to grapple with him personally but i seen him been get grabbed by a few guys I trained with, and I know have some pretty good strength, power and technique and Gustafsson you know, was pretty effortlessly able to throw them around I was really impressed. You look at his build and he looks long and lean and definitely is a quick fighter but it blew me how strong he was.
För närvarande är det Dan Henderson som är nästa man att kliva in och utmana Jones på bältet, samtidigt som Gustafsson med största sannolikhet kommer behöva ta en till match i väntan. Men så länge både Jones och Gustafsson kommer ur sina matcher som vinnare är det med stor sannolikhet att de två kommer kliva in i buren tillsammans nästa gång.
