Georges St. Pierre blev nyligen inbjuden till programmet ”Off The Record” för att prata om sin nya film Takedown. Under diskussionen gled samtalsämnet in på MMA – där GSP tog upp senaste tidens omtalade frågor kring kritiken mot UFC och doping inom sporten.
Efter att GSP bestämde sig för att ta en timeout från oktagonen väckte han debatt kring doping-frågan samt problemen med systemet runt MMA. Till sammanhanget riktar han även ett finger åt UFC där han menar att man måste få kritisera organisationen plus systemet och ta upp frågan om doping utan att få problem med organisationen som fighter. Den fria kritiken är väldigt viktig anser han för att behålla UFC:s legitimitet.
I intervjun med Michael Lansberg i Off The Record gav GSP följande svar angående doping:
“I was mad, not at the beginning, at the beginning I was taking it as a compliment for my athletic ability. But it was always there like an insect, like pick-pick-pick, at one point it became annoying.” sa GSP. “The highest standard in testing, I’m gonna choose it and I’m gonna make it.”—”I wanted to prove a point that you could be a champion without using drugs”.
GSP svarar på om han själv fightas mot någon dopad fighter:
“I cannot answer this question” sa St. Pierre. ”But it’s a lot of people on drugs. I’m never sure 100%.”—”I don’t want to accuse any individual. The reason is if I accuse one individual, 20 others will arrive. What I want to attack, I want to attack the system. I don’t want to attack the individual. And people have to understand I don’t want to attack the UFC. I’m one of the guys that stands for the sport, stand for the UFC. I want to do that to help the brand, help the sport. I’m one of the guys that fight for the legitimacy of my sport. And the reason why I want to do this is because right now I think it’s a big problem. And when I came out publicly with this, I had so many text messages about guys that are afraid to speak. Not even fighters, reporters, they’re are afraid to lose their credentials. But they tell me it’s like ‘you’re doing the right thing, we support you’. I had a talk with Lorenzo, and I think it’s going to be a good thing. It’s going to be a lot of change, it’s going to be all good for the sport. And it’s the next step for us to reach even more people, to be more legitimate.”
UFC:s kritiska till GSP:s hårda ordalag.
GSP blev även tillfrågad om hur hans relation med UFC-presidenten Dana White ser ut idag – eftersom de haft ett ganska stormig relation genom media det sista. White har bland annat påpekat att – ”om GSP har så mycket kritik mot oss borde han vara en man och ringa oss istället.
GSP fruktar inte affärsmannen White:
“Dana you have to understand, I’m not afraid. Obviously I’m not afraid, I’m not afraid either. But I’m not angry at Dana. Because Dana is the promoter, he said stuff, I don’t take personal the stuff he said. Because Dana he’s a promoter, and it’s his role as a businessman. He wants to make a rematch because it’s going to attract a lot of people. That’s his role. He doesn’t care if you like it, or love it, or hate it. He wants you to tune in. That’s the main role of Dana White.” sa GSPt, “He did it well, everybody reacted. But he doesn’t care people are like ‘oh he’s so bad’. He’s not, he’s a promoter. He’s probably the best promoter in the world right now, in all sports combined.”
Sammanfattningsvis blåser det starka vindar – för att inte säga orkaner runt UFC den senaste tiden. GSP menar på en punkt att han vill kritisera systemet och inte UFC – samtidigt är UFC en del av systemet där båda samverkar – därav är hans kritik fortfarande sammankopplad till UFC:s egna principer. Det riktas även kritik från flera andra håll, både Ken Shamrock, Tito Ortiz och Nate Quarry med flera har invändningar mot organisationen, det handlar om allt från löner, valet av hnteringen av fighters, till doping. Frågan är om inte UFC fått sig en bestående törn som innebär förlorad respekt och trovärdighet som organisation.
