Man kan bara hoppas på att Johny Hendricks talade sanning när han uppgav att han vill ha hela viktklassen efter honom och hans titel, då det är precis så den nuvarande situationen ser ut. Efter helgens UFC 171 kändes det som om samtliga welterviktare, aktiva som inaktiva, hade argument till varför just dem förtjänar nästa chans på titeln.
Efter UFC 171, där Johny Hendricks (16-2) kröntes till welterviktsklassens nya mästare efter det enhälliga domarbeslutet mot Robbie Lawler (22-10), ringlade sig kön till att möta ”Big Rigg” lång; Tyron Woodley (13-2) ansåg att vinsten mot Carlos Condit (29-8), som avbröt matchen efter en ligamentskada i höger knä, räcker för att placera honom i toppen av viktklassen, Hector Lombard (34-4) uppgav under presskonferensen efter vinsten mot Jake Shields (29-7) att han ”want that piece”, samtidigt som Rory MacDonald (16-2) tog till Twitter för att uttrycka sin önskan om att agera titelutmanare. Nick Diaz (26-9) har även han, trots sin status som pensionerad, varit ihärdig i sina försök knipa den fördelaktiga positionen. I sin analys efter galan uppgav UFC:s expertkommentator Joe Rogan att han ser just Macdonald som favorit till utmanarskapet, något som han fått ta emot en hel del kritik för. Han valde således att, via The underground, svara på de röster som påstått att han är en marionettdocka, som endast säger det som organisationen vill.
”Picking Rory over the other contenders to challenge for the title next was another complaint. The production had a list of fighters that are listed in the top contenders that they wanted me to pick one guy to challenge the title after the end of the event. It’s only my opinion and it certainly doesn’t mean that fighter will get the next shot. The reason I went with Rory is what I stated: I thought Woodley looked awesome, but the reality is Carlos blew his knee out on the take down and then it gave out when Tyron kicked him. Tyron was really impressive in the opening of the 1st with his insane speed and ability to close the distance and I would LOVE to see him fight anyone. For the title or not. The guy is a stud. It was just my opinion given the information in front of me after that event that if I had to choose one guy I would have to go with Rory. No one asked me to choose Rory, no one pressured me in any way or influenced me in any way. It’s just my opinion. I would love to see Dong Hyun Kim in the mix as well. They didn’t have him on the short list of guys, but I would like to see him fight any of the people I just mentioned, for the title or not. Matt Brown is another guy in the mix. He hurt his back recently, but I’m hoping he can heal up and get back in the running.”
Vem som faktiskt utmanar Hendricks härnäst är fortfarande högst oklart, dock råder det alltså ingen avsaknad på frivilliga. Efter den forne mästaren Georges St. Pierres (25-2) avsked från sporten har welterviktsklassen öppnats upp rejält, och vi kan se fram emot en spännande tid vad gäller titelbilden och dess framtid.
