John Cholish (8-3) hade bestämt sig redan innan matchen mot Gleison Tibau på UFC on FX 8. Det här skulle bli sista fighten. Lättviktaren meddelade sitt beslut på Twitter strax innan galan. I en intervju för MMAjunkie förklarade Cholish att han gjorde så för att det inte skulle verka som att resultatet var avgörande:
”Win, lose or draw, I wanted to put it out first (på Twitter) so people didn’t think if I lost, that was the only thing.”
Cholish gick tre matcher i UFC, en seger mot Mitch Clarke och förluster mot Danny Castillo och Gleison Tibau. 29-åringen har tidigare sagt att MMA endast var en hobby och inte en karriär:
”I had a great ride fighting from little shows all the way up. I never thought I’d get to the UFC, so it’s been a really cool experience.”
Trots att Cholish förmodligen är den ende MMA-fighter som har ett välbetalt jobb på Wall Street till vardags, ansåg han att det inte var ekonomiskt hållbart att fortsätta fightas. Inte bara för sin egen del, utan även för de coacher och tränare som ställt upp:
”I have great coaches that take time off and travel. They deserve money, as well. To be completely honest, on a fight like this, I’m losing money to come down here. Flights, hotel rooms, food – and that doesn’t even cover the cost of the time I have to pay for my coaches for training. It’s funny because people talk about the fighters, but at the same time there’s camps and coaches behind the fighters that you don’t even see. So if a fighter is having a tough time making ends meet, how do you think his coaches are doing?”
Cholish poängterade att han inte på något sätt ser ner på de fighters som valde att kämpa på i samma ekonomiska situation. Lättviktaren menade att det var ett privilegium att kunna sluta och inte tvingas hänga kvar i sporten för att det saknades andra sätt att försörja sig.
”I’m fortunate enough that I have a job that provides for me really well. I give a lot of these guys credit that fight at this level. I think they could be compensated much better based on the income that the UFC takes in. Fortunately, I can just walk away and I’m OK with it. By no means do I mean it disrespectfully toward any other fighters because I think they do a great job. But hopefully Zuffa and the UFC will start paying them a little better.”
Under sin tid i UFC, ungefär ett och ett halvt år, antas Cholish ha tjänat ihop runt 16 000 dollar på arvoden för sina matcher. I jämförelse är den genomsnittliga grundlönen på Wall Street runt 200 000 dollar per år.
