Med en bakgrund inom karate och sanshou samt en meritlista på sex vinster och inga förluster i professionell MMA besöker kubanen Yoislandy “Cuba” Izquierdo Sverige för sin UFC-debut på UFC on Fuel 2. På plats i ett förhoppningsvis fullsatt Globen kommer den svenske publikfavoriten Reza ”Mad Dog” Madadi att vänta på honom på andra sidan oktagonen.
Inför matchen har MMAnytts Marcus Kowal talat med Izquierdo för att höra vad han ser som sina styrkor som fajter och vad han har för avsikt att göra för att besegra Madadi.
“My background is in karate, so I’m definitely more of a striker. But I must say that my work on the ground has paid off, and I’ve really become a submission specialist… All fighters want to play into their strengths, and I think it’s obvious that I want to keep this fight on the feet. And Reza wants to play into his strength and take it to the ground. However, I’m not concerned about the fight going to the ground. I have trained all aspects of the game…
… My wrestling and ground game have developed throughout my fight… I feel I know [Madadi’s] game plan and I know how to stop it. We’ve got some of the best wrestlers in the world from Cuba and I’ve got some of them here with me working.”, säger Izquierdo till MMAnytt.
Den mer erfarne Madadi är känd för att vara intensiv med sina motståndare inför matcher men det är inget som ”Cuba” är särskilt oroad över.
“To tell you the truth, [his antics] kind of make me laugh. It’s not about how tough you can look or how tough you can be outside of the cage, but rather inside of it. And if he’s trying to get into my head, he can try again because one of my strengths is my mind and nothing can move my focus…
It’s not just experience in combat; there’s also personal experience. For example, there are guys who train for years and don’t fight right away, that can beat guys with a lot more fights. Thus, it’s about the complete package of the individual, and that Reza has more fights me in MMA doesn’t concern me at all.”
Yoislandy är medveten om att detta blir första gången som UFC besöker Sverige och han är glad över att han fått en liten bidragande roll i det hela.
“It’ll be a great moment for all the fighters, the fans, and the MMA world over there. It really makes me emotional to be able to play a small part in such a great and historic moment!… I want [the Swedes] to remember me as a fighter who never turned down a fight and who wasn’t scared of anyone. I want them to know that I can’t wait to get into that cage and win that fight and enjoy my victory. And I promise, I won’t disappoint!
