Tungviktaren sken äntligen ljus på den omtalade situationen, då han något förvånande bytte både gym och tränare tidigare under året.
Enligt Travis Browne (16-2) togs beslutet inte på något sätt på grund av brister i de högt aktade tränarnas kapacitet – han gjorde under en intervju med MMAJunkie i dagarna en poäng av att uttrycka sin respekt och tacksamhet mot både Greg Jackson och Mike Winkeljohn, de två huvudtränarna i Albuquerques nyfunna landmärken.
“It’s one of those things where this is what I need as an athlete right now,” berättade han. “[I’ve got] nothing bad at all to say about the Jackson-Winkeljohn camp. Coach Jackson, coach Winkeljohn really understand that about this sport. If you look them in the eye and say, ‘Coach, this is what I’m feeling,’ they can’t deny you because you’re the athlete who goes in there. But coach Edmond has been amazing.”
Det nya hemmet ligger i Glendale, Kalifornien, och huserar bland andra UFC:s bantamviktsmästarinna Ronda Rousey (10-0). “Some people have criticized me moving because I lose the training partners and coaching there,” fortsatte Browne. “I’m a pretty level-headed guy, and I understand what I’m getting myself into. Jackson’s MMA is one of the best camps in the world, so it says a lot about me to move this camp and work with coach Edmond. I’ve always been able to go in there and just mess somebody up, but I’m really learning the art of fighting. With coach Jackson and coach Wink, they really explored my athletic side. With coach Edmond, we’re really exploring the technical side of my game and learning the differences and more structure. I wouldn’t say it’s better or worse; it’s just another avenue to reach my goal.”
Rouseys framfart fångade även det Brownes blick, vilket återigen har sin grund i huvudtränarens något ouppmärksammade metoder.
“I saw Ronda come through and how much she’s grown as a fighter and as a striker,” avslutade han. “That was my deciding factor, and that’s what I needed in my arsenal. I sought him out. I saw what I needed, and he was the man to do it. He’s a very straight up, honest man, and that’s what I needed in a coach and a leader. It’s a different style of training, and it’s to further my athletic ability as a fighter. That was the deciding factor. The knowledge that coach Edmond has and he’s sharing with me and teaching me has really – I’m dumbfounded. I feel like I’m starting all over five years into my career.”
32-åringen hoppas härnäst på att än en gång etablera sig i tungviktsklassens toppskikt, då han tar sig an Brendan Schaub (10-4) under UFC 181 i början av december.
